Page structure

Headings, lists and quotes, and how they shape the table of contents.

On this page

Start every page with the answer, then the detail. Readers scan before they read.

Headings

Use H2 for sections and H3 for sub-sections. Both appear in the table of contents on the right; H4 and below do not.

Keep them short

A heading should say what the section covers in a few words, so the table of contents doubles as a summary.

Lists

  • Bullets for items in no particular order
  • Numbers for anything done in sequence
  1. Write the title
  2. Write the description
  3. Fill the sections

Quotes

Write the page you would want when something is on fire: the fix first, the background after.
